Colorado mountain wildfires and property planning

Learn from the documented 2020 East Troublesome and Cameron Peak fires while planning for your mountain property’s particular setting.

Two major fires in the 2020 record

Rocky Mountain National Park documents the effects of the Cameron Peak and East Troublesome fires in fall 2020. Although much of their footprint was outside the park, both affected park lands. These were separate incidents, and their history should not be reduced to a single generalized story about every Colorado mountain community.

Grand Lake and the Estes Valley

The National Park Service records rapid evacuations in Grand Lake on October 21, 2020, after East Troublesome’s major eastward run. Evacuations for most of the Estes Valley followed on October 22. The agency also describes spotting across the Continental Divide. These details underscore the scale of the event without predicting how another fire will travel.

Plan for the way your mountain home is managed

If you live elsewhere part of the year, decide who receives local information and who knows the property. Keep access arrangements and contractor contacts current. Review the actual vegetation around buildings rather than assuming a town name or elevation is enough to describe a site. Woodland, maintained grounds and steep inaccessible areas may need different professional input.

Connect forestry work and pretreatment

Share any forest-management recommendations with WTG before defining an application. Appropriate ground pretreatment can be discussed alongside planned tree work, debris handling and home improvements. The proposed scope should describe suitable vegetation, crew access and excluded locations; it should not imply that treatment creates a protected evacuation corridor.

Use the history to support preparation

Past fires can motivate a thoughtful review, but they are not demonstrations of product performance. Request a quote with the address, priority locations and current photographs. WTG can discuss planned service suitability and coordination while you maintain a separate household evacuation plan and follow official instructions during an incident.
