Wildfire Risk Maps: What They Can Tell a Property Owner

Use mapped risk to frame questions while keeping property-specific decisions grounded in a site review.

Read the map purpose

Wildfire Risk to Communities explains that its regional modeling does not replace an individual home assessment. Begin with the map legend, source and intended scale. Save those details with any screenshot so a color or number is not separated from the explanation that gives it meaning.

Turn the map into questions

Write down what you want to understand about your own property: the vegetation next to a building, an inaccessible slope or a recent landscape change. Add current photographs and describe work already completed. A useful question is “What should be reviewed here?” rather than asking a contractor to certify that the map color is right.

Use the right kind of review

Ask the appropriate professional to assess the building or grounds issues identified. WTG can discuss suitable vegetation pretreatment within its service scope; it does not issue the map’s rating or determine an insurance outcome. Keep the map, the site observations and the approved work as separate records so later readers understand what each establishes.
