Wildfire Roof Protection: Questions for Your Roofer

Separate roofing condition, debris maintenance and vegetation treatment when planning wildfire preparation.

By Wildfire Treatment Group.

Start with the installed roof

A roof review belongs in the building portion of your wildfire plan. CSFS recommends Class A fire-rated roofing. Ask a qualified roofer to identify the installed assembly and its condition; a material name in a real-estate listing is not a complete assessment. Save the product documentation alongside any inspection findings.

Make the maintenance work specific

Photograph roof areas from a safe location on the ground. Note places where debris appears to collect, nearby branches and sections you cannot see. Give these observations to the roofer or maintenance provider instead of climbing onto the roof yourself. Ask the proposal to distinguish cleaning, repairs and replacement, with responsibility for each task.

Coordinate the grounds separately

If tree work or roof repairs will change access around the building, tell WTG before a vegetation-treatment visit. Identify staging areas and where removed material will be placed. Ground pretreatment does not establish a roof rating or include a roof coating. The useful outcome is two clear scopes that fit the same property schedule.
