Horse Boarding Facilities: Coordinating Grounds Treatment

Separate the facility’s animal-management responsibilities from a proposed vegetation application.

By Wildfire Treatment Group.

Map use as well as ownership

Identify paddocks, turnout areas, arenas, feed storage and the vegetation proposed for review. Explain which horses or boarders use each space and whether use changes during the day. Do not assume a pasture or riding area is suitable for application because it is part of a large parcel.

Resolve instructions before notices

Ask the applicator to review the specific product and site, with appropriate animal-care input where needed. Get explicit exclusions and applicable access instructions. The facility manager should determine how to implement the approved arrangement and communicate with boarders; no universal reentry interval is stated here.

Keep the boundaries current

WTG can evaluate suitable vegetation within a defined scope. Animal evacuation and care remain separate responsibilities. Record the actual completed areas and tell the provider if fencing, grazing patterns or land use changes. A field record should never suggest that all animal-use ground was treated when only selected vegetation was included.
