Community Trails: Defining Vegetation Work Beside Public Use

Review trail ownership, access and adjacent vegetation before considering a planned application.

By Wildfire Treatment Group.

Map the trail segments

Use recognizable segment names or endpoints rather than describing the whole trail system as one area. Identify who owns or manages each section and the vegetation under consideration. Include connections to public land and any locations where the association’s authority is uncertain.

Explain normal use

Tell the provider about walkers, cyclists, maintenance vehicles and other users. Ask the responsible manager how any approved access arrangements would be communicated and implemented. A treatment provider should not be expected to infer trail traffic or close a route without an agreed plan.

Keep the proposal specific

WTG can review suitable vegetation within approved boundaries; application beside a trail does not guarantee a safe evacuation route or replace trail maintenance. Record exclusions and actual completed segments. If trail construction or vegetation clearing occurs afterward, note those changes before assuming the earlier treatment record describes the current ground.
