When a Neighbor Declines Wildfire Property Work

Focus on authorized work and constructive questions when neighboring owners choose different approaches.

By Wildfire Treatment Group.

Separate your concern from your authority

Describe the specific issue to an appropriate local wildfire professional and ask what can be reviewed on your own property. Do not enter, clear or authorize treatment on a neighbor’s land without the required permission. This page does not determine anyone’s legal duties or resolve a boundary dispute.

Keep the conversation specific

If you discuss the concern with the neighbor, share the source of the recommendation and the area involved. Ask whether they would consider a joint information visit without implying a commitment to purchase work. Avoid promising that a proposed application will eliminate the concern or guarantee either home’s survival.

Define your own project honestly

For WTG, identify the neighbor’s land as outside your authorization and show the actual boundary under review. Ask what suitable work can be considered within your approved scope. Keep adjacent untreated areas visible in the record rather than describing the result as complete neighborhood protection.
