Before a Wildfire Contractor’s Site Visit: Getting Comparable Observations

Give each provider the same current property information so their proposals are easier to understand.

By Wildfire Treatment Group.

Prepare a shared information packet

Use one current sketch, a few labeled photos and a short explanation of your priorities. Include planned vegetation or construction changes. Send the same relevant information to each provider rather than describing a different project during every conversation. Keep security details out of broadly circulated material.

Show the same areas

During visits, identify the areas you want reviewed and the conditions that remain uncertain. Ask each provider to note what it inspected and what it could not inspect. If one visit reveals a material change, communicate it to the other providers before treating their proposals as comparable.

Compare findings before prices

Ask which observations led to each proposed scope. WTG may identify an application opportunity while another provider recommends clearing or building work; those are different tasks. Resolve the sequence and boundaries first. A lower total is not meaningful if the proposals describe different areas, preparation or responsibilities.
