Wildfire Preparation Under Decks: Storage and Access

Plan under-deck cleanup and access before discussing nearby vegetation treatment.

By Wildfire Treatment Group.

Look beneath the deck

NFPA advises against storing flammable materials beneath decks and porches and recommends removing accumulated debris. Turn that guidance into a manageable property task: identify what is stored there, who owns it and where it can go. An inaccessible space needs an appropriate contractor review rather than a guess from a distant photo.

Resolve the storage problem

Removing items once may not create a lasting change if there is no alternative storage. Decide where seasonal furniture, spare materials and gardening supplies will live. Ask the responsible person to document the cleared space and flag damaged access panels or other repair needs. For a rental property, include the arrangement in the maintenance handoff.

Distinguish cleanup from treatment

A deck, the space beneath it and nearby vegetation present different scope questions. Show all three during a property review. WTG does not automatically treat decking or belongings as part of ground application. Discuss exclusions and access before scheduling, and complete any separately agreed cleanup in the sequence specified for the project.
