Wildfire Vegetation Planning for Self-Storage Facilities

Plan a perimeter review around customer access, stored property and facility operations.

By Wildfire Treatment Group.

Map the facility edge

Identify the vegetation areas you want reviewed, the buildings they adjoin and the land you control. Include outdoor storage, customer parking and maintenance access. A perimeter fence is not necessarily an ownership boundary, so clarify uncertain areas before asking for an application scope.

Account for changing occupancy

Outdoor stored vehicles and customer belongings may move between the assessment and work date. Explain how the facility will identify occupied spaces and communicate instructions. Ask the provider how exclusions will be confirmed on arrival. Treatment of surrounding vegetation does not automatically include spraying stored items or building surfaces.

Preserve a facilities record

For WTG, define the approved areas and the contact authorized to address unexpected conditions. Keep customer operations and emergency procedures separate from the planned service. Store the completion map with maintenance records and note later changes to fencing, storage layout or landscaping that affect the reviewed footprint.
